In the past the building would have been surveyed with a Total Station and Distometer. Whilst accurate the process was lengthy and required 2 surveyors. Each column and beam being surveyed a single point at a time. Given the low-density data capture we would need to support the survey with photogrammetry. Production of the 3D Revit BIM model is equally time consuming from a 3D Points Topographical Survey.
3D Laser Scanning has changed the survey industry for good. Arguably traditional methods remain preferential in some circumstances but that is not the case when capturing steel frame geometry.
Thankfully today we have the benefit of being able to survey with Faro Focus Laser Scanners. These agile instruments need a single surveyor in half the time. Moreover, the data capture is comprehensive in comparison recording almost 1 million dimensions per second. With simultaneous high definition imaging we possess all we require to generate precision 3D Revit Models. Detailing is accurate down to nut and bolt level and provides the ability to take off sections through the steel and joints.
