The Gun Inn dates back to the early 18th century. It took its name from the famous cannon which was fired to celebrate the opening of the West India Import Docks. Lord Nelson would regularly frequent the Gun for secret liaisons with Lady Hamilton up until his death during the battle of Trafalgar. The Inn has a long association with smugglers who landed contraband using a hidden tunnel. To this day there is still a spy hole in the circular staircase to watch out foe The Revenue Men. The survey of this historic Inn was commissioned by Fuller Smith and Turner and included all floor plans, elevations and sections.
