Beatties has stood proudly on the corner of Victoria and Darlington street in the centre of Wolverhampton for over 140 years. In February 2020, the site passed to new owners and soon after Surveybase Limited were appointed to deliver a precision digital survey.
The survey commenced in the weeks immediately prior to Covid-19 lockdown. At that time there was understandable concern for the welfare of our surveyors and the public. To their credit the team delivered the site survey in record time, often working out of hours to ensure completion before the lockdown deadline. Their professional service and dedication are notable, and we owe them our gratitude and respect.
The enormous Beatties site is an arrangement of many buildings including a 4-level department store, multi storey car park, hotel, and nightclub. Given the sites complex geography careful management was needed to ensure accurate and consistent measurement. Our 3D Laser Scanning team were tightly controlled by Land Surveyors using the latest Trimble Total Stations. Individual scan data was expertly connected generating a precise project cloud ready for CAD processing.
One of the many challenges was to generate extensive building sections along “cranked” cut lines. These were carefully specified by the design team at Yoop Architects, who needed critical data on the volume of internal space, from finished floor level to the structural ceilings. Processing of the site survey data needed a team of 4 skilled CAD Technicians led by experienced team leader, Jon Lyons. Work continued steadily for the 12 weeks of lockdown helping to maintain focus in an uncertain time.
Colleagues consider the Beatties project our finest work to date. There is no doubt of the scale of the survey, or complexity of challenge and given the period in which it was delivered, it is hard to disagree. One thing is certain we are eternally grateful to our Clients for choosing to work with Surveybase Limited and we wish them every success in the development of the site.
